29.1 Advertisement Production For Television

An Introduction to Advertising.

Advertisements are the biggest form of funding for all commercial television stations. BBC are funded by the license payers, so stations such as ITV, Channel Four and Five, as well as the terrestrial commercial channels use advertising to raise money to broadcast and create new television shows. From the BBC website, their stance on advertising: The BBC is not permitted to carry advertising or sponsorship on its public services. This keeps them independent of commercial interests and ensures that they can be run instead to serve the general public interest. Should the BBC turn to advertising to make more money, despite being funded by license payers, they risk being dictated by the commercial industry. It is similar in some ways to the fact that British television isn't allowed to use Product Placement, as opposed to the States.
